4-H Newsletter--June 2008

            It’s that time of year again- 4-H time! We know that your busy with your many 4-H projects, but between training that steer to lead or sewing that beautiful outfit, be sure to get involved and check out all the wonderful fun opportunities available. We have many 4-H Day Camps, Clinics and Events going on this summer. Good Luck with all those projects!

4-H Presentation Contest is Coming Up! Mark Your Calendars!

            The Frontier County 4-H Presentations Contest will be held Tuesday, June 10, 2008 at 6:30 p.m. at the Livestock Training Center on the NCTA Campus in Curtis. Please pre-register with contestant’s name and presentation title to the Extension Office (308-367-4424 or 1-888-367-4424) by June 6, 2008.

Clover Kids Camp

            Attention kids ages 5-8! Need something fun to do on a hot summer day and meet some new friends? How about an afternoon with other kids your age to make some cool projects. There is still time to register for the 6th Annual Clover Kid Camp which will take place June 20, 2008 at Curtis on the NCTA campus and on June 27, 2008 at the Eustis Fair Building.

            Each camp will be from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. If you have any questions, please call the UNL Extension Office in Frontier County at 367-4424 or toll free at 1-888-367-4424. Registration deadline is June 13, 2008.

Discoveries Day CampRegistration Deadline June 13th

            Discoveries Day Camp provides youth the opportunity to discover fun educational experiences within the 4-H curriculum areas of science, design, nature and personal development. The camp activities will be “What’s the Question?”, “Step-By-Step”, “Discover Careers”, “Encaustic Painting”, and “Experience Science”.

            The camp is open to all youth 8 to 12 years of age. This camp is offered in the following locations:

            June 23, 2008 at the Fair Board Community Building in McCook

            June 25, 2008 at the Ella Missing Community Center in Arapahoe

Each camp will start at 10 a.m. and go to 4 p.m. Transportation can be coordinated through the extension office. Camp cost is $6.00 with lunch and snacks provided. Pre-registration is due June 13th, at the UNL Extension office in Frontier County. Please make checks payable to University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension. Contact the Extension office at 367-4424 or toll free at 1-888-367-4424 for a registration form and/or more information.

Animal Science Youth Field Day A West Central District event designed for 4-H youth to have fun and participate in activities focused on livestock production. June 5 Lexington

Babysitting Clinic: Sitter Sense Learn about safety, snacks, and games to play when caring for young children. (10-13 year olds) June 11 McCook

Summer Day Camps: Discover 4-H – Discover You! Discover fun and educational experiences within science, nature, art design, communication, and careers. (8-12 year olds) June 23 McCook and June 25 Arapahoe

Clover Kid Day Camps Special fun camps for youth ages 5-8 with lots of hands on activities. June 20 Curtis and June 27 Eustis

Small Animal Showmanship Clinic Learn how to prepare and show your rabbit or poultry. June 21 Curtis

Beef Fitting and Showing Clinic Bring your calf and your supplies for a full day of learning from an expert on showing beef. June 24 Curtis

Pre-registration is required for these events. Call early for details on times, fees, and transportation.

4-H Hats on Sale

4-H Hats are on sale this month for $10.00. Come on in to the Frontier County Extension Office to get yours now!

Rolling Meadows 4-H Club Car Wash

            The Rolling Meadows 4-H Club will be having a free will donation Car Wash on Saturday June 7th from 8 am to 12 pm at the Eustis Farnam High School parking lot. The proceeds will be going to the American Cancer Society Relay for Life Team. Be sure to come support the community and get a clean car!

Family and Consumer Sciences Webquiz

Take the FCS Web Quiz! Do you like computers? Are you between ages 8 and 12? If so, the Family and Consumer Science Web Quiz is just for you! This quiz lets you test how much you know about things like making food, staying healthy, managing finances, and baby-sitting. You can find the quiz on the 4-H website (4h.unl.edu). Before you take the quiz, you might want to look at these manuals:

To take the FCS Webquiz go to 4h.unl.edu and click on Table of Contents on the left side of the screen. Next scroll down and click on FCS Quiz. On the next page click on 2008 FCS Quiz at the top center of the screen and proceed to the following page and enter your information. After submitting your information you will be directed to a page that will give you directions to register to take the quiz. Follow the directions and click on the link at the bottom of the page to begin the quiz. Once you take the quiz, your answers will be immediately graded and you will be able to find out how you did. You will also get a ribbon from you local Extension Office. Due to technological problems, after taking the quiz we ask that you call the office at 367-4424 to let us know your name and score so we make sure you get your ribbon.

            This quiz is available to take online as an individual but if you are interested in getting your whole club involved you can do that to! Just contact the Frontier County Extension Office at 367-4424 to make arrangements. This is a GREAT way to have fun and keep learning!

4-H’ers Compete in District Clover Challenge Contest

The 2008 West Central District 4-H Clover Challenge Contest tested the knowledge of 29 4-H’ers representing nine teams from four area counties. The on-line contest was held Wednesday, May 20. The Frontier County 4-H members competed from the computer lab on the NCTA campus.
           The 4-H Clover Challenge is a competitive technology event for young people who are interested in learning more about Family and Consumer Sciences subject matter. The interactive, quiz-bowl competition consists of a series of multiple choice questions based on family finance, health, foods, clothing and home environment.
The top two teams will represent the district at the State Clover Challenge Contest on June 30 on the University of NE - Lincoln campus. The top two teams were Dawson County 1 and Frontier County 1. Dawson County 1 team members John Frerichs, Juliana Batie and Ana Lopez placed first in the district contest. Frontier County 1 team members: Colleen Melvin, Joleen Rupe and Ashley Pleschourt, placed second.
           Other participating teams from Frontier County included:
Frontier County 2 - Hayley Meyers and Johanna Nutt
           Clover Challenge sponsors are the University of Nebraska Lincoln Extension, Nebraska 4-H Foundation and Nebraska Investment Finance Authority. The 4-H program is sponsored by the University of Nebraska Extension.

Club Notes

Happy Helpers 4-H Club will meet on June 9th at 1:00 pm at the Library Computer Lab on the NCTA Campus to complete the Family and Consumer Sciences Web Quiz.
