Horse ID Sheets Are Due
I. D. sheets are DUE in the Extension office Thursday, May 15 along with District and State
Show Entries if you plan to compete. For a list of the upcoming Horse 4-H Clinics and Shows contact the

Attention Quilters!
Come and join your fellow quilters for a fun get-away, May 16, 17, & 18 on the NCTA Campus in
Curtis. Enjoy a trunk show, classes, quilt show, merchant mall, food and entertainment for ages 8 to 108.
Classes are being offered for beginners to experienced. All minors must be accompanied by an adult. You
may register for all classes or just one. Classes include Mother/Daughter Quilt Camp, Marbleizing with
Shaving Cream, Strung Out Stars, Woven Tumbling Blocks, Playing with Crayons, Sweatshirt Jacket,
Hand Quilting, Welcome Banner, Postcard Fun, Embellishing Your Quilts, and Painted Watercolor

Photography Day Camp Offered
If you are taking a Photography project this year, plan to attend the Frontier County Photography
Day Camp, June 2, at NCTA, Curtis. Keith & Holly Howe will be the workshop presenters. This will be a
great learning experience!
Attention 4-H’ers Showing Stock-Feeders, Dairy, and Breeding Beef
If you are planning on showing a stocker-feeder, bucket calf, dairy or breeding beef at fair, you
MUST have their tags in and the ID sheets in to the extension office by June 2, 2008.
4-H Presentation Contest
The 4-H Presentation Contest will be combined with Red Willow County and Furnas County again
this year. It will be held Tuesday, June 10, 2008, at 6:30 p.m. at the Livestock Training Center on the
NCTA campus in Curtis.
Anyone may present an individual or team presentation. Please read the 2008 fairbook for the
information on presentations. The Multimedia presentation is a fully automated presentation 6 to 10
minutes in length using PowerPoint. The presentation is completely free standing and only requires an
introduction by the participant.
There will be three divisions, Junior (8-10); Intermediate (11-13) and Senior (14 & over).
Participants may not exceed 10 minutes for individuals and 15 minutes for team presentations.
Pre-registration is due in the Extension Office by June 4th.
Animal Science Youth Field Day
If you would like to learn more about livestock and have fun with friends, you should take part in
the West Central Youth Animal Science Field Day, June 5, 2008!
The field Day is designed to present a variety of fun and educational activities about many different
aspects of livestock production. Youth will participate as part of a team of four in different stations
throughout the day. You may come as a team with other youth, or you may come as individuals or smaller
groups and you will be paired with other youth of similar age to forma team. Parents and other adults with
interests in the livestock industry and educating youth are also encouraged to attend and participate. A
lunch will be provided for those that participate in the entire Field Day.
Topics for the stations include beef, sheep, and swine evaluation, hay judging, breeds and feeds
identification, livestock equipment, meats and food safety, livestock management, a breeding and
performance problem, a marketing problem, and a quiz bowl competition.
Each of the stations will have two different levels of participation, one designed for youth ages 12-18 and the other designed for youth under age 12.
The Youth Animal Science Field Day will be Thursday, June 5, at the Dawson County Fairgrounds
in Lexington. It will begin at 9:00 a.m. with the final wrap-up ending around 3:30 p.m. There is a $5.00
registration fee for lunch. Please register at the Frontier County Extension Office by May 30. The Field
Day is sponsored by West Central Research and Extension District, Nebraska 4-H and the Animal Science
Department.
Babysitting Clinic Offered
Thinking about babysitting this summer? Learn about safety, play, snacks, games and more when
caring for young children. You’ll leave with increased confidence and a lot of ideas for babysitting.
Sitter Sense Workshop is being offered at the Red Willow Fairgrounds in the Fairboard Community
Building in McCook on June 11, 2008. The workshop will run from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. and is for
10-13 year olds. There will be a fee of $5.00 which will cover lunch and supplies. Transportation will be
provided on a first come, first serve basis. Pre-paid registration is due June 4, 2008.
Small Animal Showmanship Clinic
If you would like to know more about preparing your rabbit or poultry for fair and showmanship,
plan to attend the Small Animal Showmanship Clinic, June 21, 2008 at the NCTA Campus in Curtis, 1:00
p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Jessica Sexson, State Fair Rabbit Showmanship Winner, will be the presenter. You will
need to bring a show animal. Contact the extension office by June 18th with your intent to participate.
Beef Fitting and Showmanship Clinic
Frontier County is hosting a Beef Fitting and Showmanship Clinic for 4-H’ers on Tuesday, June
24th, 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Dana Hall from McCool Junction is the presenter for this day long clinic.
You will need to bring your calf; show stick; blow dryer; water bucket; grooming chute; scotch
comb; show halter; clippers; shampoo for calf; Sullivan supplies, which include black finisher, Ultra white,
Prime Time Adhesive, Tail Adhesive, Pink Oil, Hocus Pocus.
Pre-register by June 17th by calling the Extension Office at 367-4424 or 1-888-367-4424 with your
intent to participate. There will be a $15 fee.
Summer Day Camps
University of Nebraska Extension is offering Summer Day Camps in Arapahoe and McCook again
this year. These camps are open to all youth 8 to 12 years of age and the cost is $6.00. Lunch and snacks
will be provided. Pre-registration is due by June 13 at the Frontier County Extension Office.
The camp will be offered June 23, 2008, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Red Willow Fairboard
Community Building in McCook and June 25, 2008, at the Ella Missing Community Center in Arapahoe.
One UNL van will be used to provide transportation, so make your plans early.
This Day Camp provides youth the opportunity to discover fun educational experiences within the
4-H curriculum areas of science, design, nature and personal development.
Avian Influenza Testing
Protect your poultry. Protect the poultry industry. Protect public health. We understand the fair,
especially the day of the show, is a very busy time for everyone. In an effort to minimize disruption on the
day of the show, the Nebraska Department of Ag would like to test birds for exhibition prior to the fair.
The Animal Industry inspectors can test the birds on-farm within 90 days prior to the fair. Please call our
office by June 6 if you are interested in on-farm testing before the fair.
4-H Livestock and Horse Shows
The extension office receives flyers on shows for livestock species and horse. If you are interested
in any of these shows, contact the extension office.
