4-H Council Minutes -- January 2008

The Frontier County 4-H Council met January 21, 2008 at 7:30 p.m. in Ag Hall on the NCTA Campus. President Turena Ehlers called the meeting to order. Roll Call was taken with Turena Ehlers, Sue Nutt, Cindy Melvin, Johanna Nutt, and Extension Educator Barb Scharf present. The new member will be Jo Popp.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read. Sue Nutt moved to have the minutes were approved as read. Johanna seconded. The motion was passed by all.

Barb Scharf gave the financial report. There was $2,184.18 as of the end of the year.

We had grants and users’ fees to cover some events. The cotton candy machine was rented out two times. The Happy Homemaker’s 4-H Club donated $200.00. The concession stand at the MVES Field Day brought in $200.00.

Unfinished Business:

Successes of 2007 were touched upon. One being having scholarships for Big Red Camps and having two 4-H’ers use them. Another success was how the dog project area had grown, and also the fact that we have been able to keep our poultry disease free in the county.

Tentative 2008 4-H calendar was reviewed and approved with some changes. We are having Singing Valentines again this year on Valentine’s Day, and we will be having a small animal showmanship clinic in June.

There were no fair book changes at this time.

February is 4-H promotion month. Singing Valentines will be done; we will put bookmarks in the public and school libraries; a window display will be placed in a downtown storefront; there will be camp brochures taken to the schools where pencils will be handed out, a candy guessing game, and a coloring contest held to promote 4-H. It was suggested that Gail Jurjens will conduct this promotion in the Eustis/Farnam school; Cindy Fritsche in the Maywood school; and Heath Ehlers, Johanna Nutt, Hayley Meyers, Sue Nutt or Cindy Melvin at Medicine Valley Elementary School.

February 23, 2008 we will do a 4-H promotion in the Town and Country Market in Curtis from 10:00 a.m. to Noon. We will have camp and project information, hand out stickers, and have a candy guessing contest with both an adult and a child division.

We are planning the following fundraisers: Singing Valentines in February and the concession stand at the MVES Field Day in May.

New Business:

The new 4-H Policy Handbook and Financial Management issues were reviewed. Cindy Melvin moved to accept Frontier County’s Grievance Policy as it is written. Sue Nutt seconded and all approved.

Sue Nutt moved that the Frontier County 4-H Council form a Financial Management Committee. The members would be appointed by the 4-H Council President. Johanna Nutt seconded and all approved.

Turena Ehlers made the following appointments to the committee: Sue Nutt, Cindy Melvin, Turena Ehlers, and Cloid Smith. The committee members will need to be available to sign checks and assist in financial issues of the council.

Officers were elected with the following results:           President – Sue Nutt

                                                                                      Vice President – Turena Ehlers

                                                                                      Secretary/Treasurer – Cindy Melvin

Youth representatives to the 4-H Council were discussed. Barb Scharf moved to invite Ethan Jones to join us. The motion was seconded by Turena Ehlers. We will retain Heath Ehlers, Calvin Rupe, Ethan Smith, Hayley Meyers, and Johanna Nutt.

Scholarships are available for 2008 Big Red Summer Academic Camp through the Extension Office. Barb has a $500.00 grant for this and would like 4-H’ers to sign up before the early bird special is over.

There will be a 4-H Positive Youth Development study done in Frontier County if they can get 20 4-H’ers, 13-17 years old, for the study. Parental permission will be necessary in order for the kids to be involved.

The proposed 4-H budget was reviewed and Sue Nutt moved to accept it as written. Turena Ehlers seconded and all approved.

Dates for the 4-H Council Meetings in 2008 were discussed. The July meeting was changed to July 8th at 7:30 p.m. The next meeting is March 17, 2008, at 7:30 p.m.

at Ag Hall on the NCTA campus.

Turena Ehlers adjourned the meeting.

Submitted by Cindy Melvin, Secretary/Treasurer.
