Clover Challenge Contests Offers New Opportunities for 4-H Youth
Imagine head-to-head competition with 4-H’ers from all across your area! Only this time, it’s
over the computer! The University of Nebraska-Lincoln 4-H Youth Development is offering more
regional opportunities for 4-H youth. Clover Challenge is a competitive technology event for young
people who are interested in learning more about Family and Consumer Sciences subject matter.
Similar to quiz bowl, the Clover Challenge consists of a series of multiple choice and true/false
questions based on family finance, health, foods, clothing, and home environment. Clover Challenge
participants compete in teams of two, three, or four youth; these teams compete against each other in
randomly chosen tournament-like brackets. Together, the team reviews the randomly selected question
that appears on their computer screen and selects the answer they believe is correct. If the answer is
correct, the team wins that question and takes control over a leaf of the Clover. If incorrect, the opposing
team has a chance to “steal” the question and gain that leaf. The first team that can successfully gain
control over all leaves of the clover wins that round and goes on to compete against another team.
Competition continues until there is only one team left.
The goal of the program is to increase youth understanding and knowledge of Family and
Consumer Sciences subject matter using technology through county and district level participation in the
Clover Challenge Contest. West Central District Clover Challenge Contest will be held this spring, May
20th. The top two teams from each district will have the opportunity to compete at the State Clover
Challenge Contest held during the PASE / Life Challenge Events, June 30 - July 2, 2008 at the University
of Nebraska-Lincoln. As a 4-H member, youth will have the opportunity to register to be a part of their
county’s Clover Challenge team. Past participants of the contest have gained valuable knowledge,
understanding and fun!

4-H Leader's Creed
I BELIEVE:
...The 4-H member is more important than the 4-H project.
...Learning how to do the project is more important then the project itself.
...4-H'ers should be their own best exhibits.
...No award is worth sacrificing the reputation of a member or a leader.
...Competition should be given no more emphasis than other fundamentals of 4-H work.
...Enthusiasm is caught, not taught.
...To learn by doing is fundamental in any sound educational program and is characteristic of the 4-H
program.
...Generally speaking, there is more than one good way to do most things.
...Every 4-H member needs to be noticed, to feel important, to win and be praised (leaders, too).
...Our job as leader is to teach 4-H members How to think, not What to think.

Volunteer's 4-H Pledge
I pledge my head to give children the information I can, to help
them see things clearly and to make wise decisions.
I pledge my heart to encourage and support children no matter
whether they have success or disappointments.
I pledge my hands to help children's groups; if I cannot be a leader,
I can help in many equally important ways.
I pledge my health to keep children strong and well for a better world
through 4-H, for children's groups, our community, our country and
our world.
